What Are Magic Mushrooms?

Ahh yes, a question as old as shrooms itself! Before we dive deeper into topics such as how to have a good trip (and how to avoid a bad one!), we need to define what exactly psilocybin mushrooms are – and what it is that makes them so magical.

Psilocybin mushrooms, or more commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms,” are fungi containing the psychoactive compound psilocybin. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychoactive compound responsible for producing the ever-acclaimed magic mushroom effects such as hallucinations, spiritual awakenings, and mystical-like experiences.

So yes, magic mushrooms are in fact actual mushrooms, and some enthusiasts do add it to their pizzas! While not every mushroom is psychedelic (or contains psilocybin), the fungi are praised for their mind-awakening effects and potential to treat depression, OCD, alcohol addiction, and other ailments!

The Effect of Psilocybin In Scientific Studies & Health

While psilocybin was long stigmatized for its connection to the hippie movements, today, the magical psychedelic compound is recognized for its strong preliminary evidence in treating serious medical conditions. In fact, the U.S Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has described psychedelic psilocybin as a “breakthrough therapy” and has fast-tracked approval for research on other psilocybin substances and pharmaceuticals.

Research on psilocybin has amassed strong support from various medical institutions. For instance, the John Hopkins Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research which is the first institute to obtain regulatory approval in the United State to reinitiate research with psilocybin.

Psilocybin magic mushrooms have long been known for their mind-awakening capabilities and psychedelics “trips,” which offer users an opportunity for deepened introspection and clarity. However, it’s the compound’s promising potential to treat mental health ailments — with preliminary results proving more impactful than any other medical treatment. In therapeutic studies, many recent studies have highlighted psilocybin’s ability to treat mental health ailments like anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and depression. There’s no telling how impactful future research will be!

How Do Magic Mushrooms Work?

The power of magic mushrooms is truly a work of, well, magic – but just how exactly do they work?

Whether it’s a microdose capsule or in its raw form, when psilocybin is ingested, your body converts the psychedelic compound into psilocin (the derivative of psilocybin). Psilocin often produces emotional effects similar to that of serotonin, as it binds to the same receptors in your brain. Psilocin is responsible for both the mental and physically relieving effects including increased creativity and memory, heightened productivity levels, pure euphoria, deep introspection and, most famously, mind-opening “trips.”

What Do Magic Mushrooms Feel Like?

Well, it depends. Many people turn to magic mushrooms for spiritual experiences, but it’s important to remember this may not be the case for everyone! Shrooms are most widely known for their psychedelic properties and hallucinogenic capabilities. However, they’re equally effective in producing other effects, such as increased productivity, happiness, focus, creativity, and more.

For instance, some people might hope to be sent to another dimension to communicate with “higher spirits,” and others might just be looking to microdose psilocybin for improved productivity and euphoria. The effects you feel from the psilocin in your body will drastically vary depending on the amount or dosage that you take, as well as the strain.

How To Properly Dose With Shrooms

The best way to enjoy our magic shrooms is with the right dose. This is because the amount that you ingest is ultimately the deciding factor of your experience and whether your unique needs will be satisfied.

Here’s a general guide to help you figure what dose is right for you:

0.2 to 0.5 grams – This is the best amount to start if you want to microdose. Microdosing is the practice of ingesting a barely perceptible amount of psilocybin, but enough to gently boost your mood, productivity, creativity, and other cognitive skills.

Don’t expect to experience any significant effects from psilocybin. However, you will get some positive effects due to microdosing such as a boost in creativity and a cheerful disposition.

0.8 to 1.5 grams – Whether you’re brand new to the psilocybin scene or an experienced user, we recommend this dose for those looking for a relaxing, but effective trip. Taking a lower dosage still allows you to experience the psychedelic effects of psilocybin, similar to that of marijuana. However, if you’re looking to experience a more profound and powerful trip, a higher dosage might be what you’re looking for.

1.5 to 3 grams – You’re in for a real trip now! At higher doses like this, you may begin to experience more vivid hallucinations. The body high and visual effects will become noticeably stronger and you’’ probably begin to lose track of time!

For many, this range is enough to provoke an impactful trip and a sense of mental clarity… But if that still isn’t enough for you, then you could always try a larger dose.

3+ grams – This isn’t for the light of heart! Doses above 3 grams can become overwhelming for many users, and even frightening. At this dose, users have described intense hallucinations — some people even describe meeting “spiritual beings.” We wouldn’t recommend taking a dose this high unless you’re very experienced with psychedelics.

Of course, effects may vary for everyone and just because we described a certain sensation to take place at a particular dose, that may not be the case for you. The strain of intake also plays a big part. Strains that are more mellow in their effects like the B+ Magic Mushroom can be perfect at 1.5 to 3 grams, even for beginners. On the other hand, stronger strains like the Daddy Long Legs shrooms are best used at 0.8 to 1.5 grams for starters, topping up the dosages if needed.

How To Take Psilocybin Shrooms

Shrooms can be consumed in a variety of easy and enjoyable ways. While there’s no “right” method to use, depending on your unique need, your experience will largely be dependent on the amount you consume or your dosage (see above).

Popular ways to consume shrooms include:

  • Steeped Shroom Teas and Drink Mixes

Microdose drink mixes are a perfect way to add some psilocybin to your life! In fact, herbal psilocybin-infused teas as a method to take shrooms are very common among shamans and those who embark on spiritual journeys around the world. Today, drink mixes have made drinking psilocybin-infused beverages easier than, regardless of whether you’re looking for a boost of energy, mental clarity, or a spiritual awakening — and they’re wayyy tasier!

  • Psilocybin Edible Gummies and Candies

Edibles will forever hold a spot as a favourite method of consumption within the cannabis community, and this holds true among psilocybin enthusiasts! This largely has to do with the variety of delicious options available. From microdose candies to full-dose edible gummies, there’s always an option for your unique tastes!

  • Microdose Capsules

The use of microdose capsules has quickly grown in popularity and is on its way to becoming a fan favourite way to microdose! Not only are microdose capsules ridiculously easy to take (if you’re not looking to chew away on dried shrooms!), but their compact, yet effective, size has helped make them a go-to choice for many.

  • Gourmet Dishes

In recent years, more and more professional chefs have experimented with using magic mushrooms as an ingredient for their dishes. Of course, you can always try to incorporate shrooms into your own specialty dishes, just be mindful of the potency and strength magic mushrooms have – we definitely wouldn’t recommend stuffing your burger full of mushrooms unless you’re looking for a wild ride!

  • Take ‘em Straight-Up

Eating dried shrooms in their raw state is a tried and true method for many veterans. In fact, for many psychonauts and psilocybin enthusiasts, this is their consumption method of choice. From chip sandwiches (placing your shrooms in between two chips) to just gnawing away at them, it doesn’t really matter — after all, the way you consume your shrooms is just one small pitstop you need to make before you can start your trip! ?

Now that we’ve learned about what magic shrooms are, how they work, and how you can consume them, let’s talk a bit about what you can do to try and ensure you have the best trip ever.

How To Have A Good Trip On Magic Mushrooms

As much as we hate to say it, having a good trip isn’t always guaranteed when you take magic mushrooms. However, if you do have a “bad trip,” this doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t going to learn or gain anything important. If deep introspection and expansive “understanding” are things you’re looking for, a bad trip might just offer that.

For many people, a “bad trip” still provides a significant amount of insight and understanding. While you shouldn’t fear “a bad” trip before taking shrooms (more on that in a bit), let’s go over some tips and advice to help make your trip as safe, enjoyable, and meaningful as possible!

  • Think About What You Want To Achieve from the Mushroom

“It’s All About Your Mindset” – Someone

If you’re planning to take a moderate dose of magic mushrooms to a trip, it’s important to think about why you want to a trip. Of course, this isn’t necessarily a requirement, as many people take shrooms for the fun of it (it really is an incomparable experience). However, if you’re a first time user, going into your trip with a goal in mind can prove critical to ensuring a good experience. Whether you’re hoping to learn something about yourself or just looking to view the world differently, you’ll find your mindset can make all the difference.

Happy mind, happy time.

While there isn’t any proven research (yet) on how your mindset can affect your trip, the general consensus among the psilocybin community is that you should avoid taking shrooms if you’re in a dark headspace. Again, there’s no proof or real evidence on whether or not a positive/ negative mindset can affect your trip. However, if you ask any experienced user you’ll hear time and time again about how the deciding factor between a “good” and “bad” trip is the attitude and mindset you bring into it.

  • Have A Friend (or Trip Sitter) Look After You

Whether you’re a first time user or a magic mushroom guru, it’s always recommended you take your shrooms with a friend. Commonly referred to as a “trip sitter,” having a (sober) friend you trust watch after you while you trip is a simple way to ensure you stay safe.

It’s even better if your trip sitter has done shrooms themselves. This way they’ll understand exactly what you’re going through and be able to react in a comforting and supportive way (for the most part). Moreover, you’ll find the attitude or vibe of your trip sitter can also affect your mood during your trip, so be sure your friend is up for the adventure – remember, negative mind, negative time!

  • Location, Location, Location

As we briefly mentioned, when you’re tripping, you’ll often find your mood will change depending on your surroundings. In order to keep a stress-free and comfortable mindset, be sure you’re taking your magic mushrooms in a safe environment.

Everyone’s safe space is different. For instance, your safe space might be on a beach under the sun with your best friends. Or maybe, in the comfort of your own house with some soothing music. Regardless, apart from your general safety, your psilocybin experience may drastically differ depending on your surroundings, so choose strategically.

But of course, just because you start your trip in one location doesn’t mean you can’t move around after! If you are heading on your own little adventure, just avoid any obviously dangerous spaces (like a busy street) and DO NOT drive.

  • Personal Items And Your To-Do List

One of the best parts about taking magic mushrooms is the way it alters your interactions with the world! For starters, be sure you’re wearing something comfortable and that all valuable items are securely stored somewhere safe. Once that’s all set, try making a list of everything you want to do during your trip (trust us, if it’s not written down, you’ll definitely forget about it).

You’ll find that music and the world itself is all of a sudden AMPLIFIED and much more vibrant! Even looking at your own hands can be an interesting experience. If you’re outside, you may find the foliage is “breathing” or pulsing — the world really comes to life. Life on shrooms truly is an amazing experience, and if you’re hoping to reflect on your trip, try keeping a notebook with you to write down everything that happens.

Trippers Beware! – What To Do During A Bad Trip

Tripping on shrooms is generally a safe and non-addictive experience. However, as is the case with everything else in the world, there are things you should be mindful of.

Ego-death

An “ego death” is often described as a complete loss or deletion of everything that makes you, you. If an ego death were to occur, you likely would have taken a very large dose of psilocybin (upwards of over 5 grams), however everyone does react differently and effects may vary from person to person.

During an ego death, a person may find their self-identity has been rebooted, almost like they have a chance to redefine who they choose to be — it’s almost like your personality is reborn. While research on a potential explanation behind ego deaths does exist, more research is needed to truly understand this baffling phenomenon.

Not All “Trippy” Shrooms Are Safe

There are over 200 types of trip-inducing mushrooms — roughly half of them contain the beloved psilocybin, while the other contains amanitin. It is important to know that Amanitin is NOT a psychedelic and can be fatal. In fact, in 2016, a three-year-old boy died from the deadly chemical.

While many magic mushrooms can be naturally occurring in nature, what we’re trying to say is that you shouldn’t be going around a forest to harvest your own shrooms. For your safety, always purchase your psilocybin products from a trusted, reputable, and established dispensary, such as Bud Lab.

Bad trips

During a bad trip, you may experience nausea, mood swings, anxiety, confusion and paranoia. This is why it is beyond important to have a sober, trusted friend watch over your trip to help keep you calm, safe, and comfortable.

Enjoy The Trip

As the typical trip lasts for roughly 1 hour, if you are experiencing a “bad trip,” it’s important to mentally remind yourself that in a short matter of time everything will be back to normal! Many users have found they were able to change the outcome of their trip simply by mentally placing themselves into a positive space. Remember, you’ve done your research and are aware of what you hope to find. We know you’re brave and will come out of your trip having gained something!

Our Closing Thoughts…

If you decide to take shrooms, then you’ve acknowledged you’re in for a ride — whether it’s a fun one or not, is in many ways up to you to decide. It’s a beautifully weird time, just remember to have fun: you got this! You now have an idea of what to expect and how you can make the most of your trip, but at the end of the day, no single trip is the same. Do some research on specific strains, grab a few of them off our site, and enjoy the trip!
